Formal Peer Evaluation

From Year 3

In Fall 2024 I served as a peer evaluator for an adjunct instructor teaching CHEM V20 (now V101), Elementary Chemistry. The observation was part of the district's regular adjunct faculty evaluation process under Form A2, with Dean Aaron Jones and Chair Malia Rose-Seisa on the committee. My role was to observe one lecture, submit a written evaluation, and contribute to the committee's final summary.

The session covered limiting reactants and percent yield. The instructor worked each calculation step by step on the Docucam and used a cheesecake recipe as an analogy for percent yield. The tone was supportive and approachable throughout.

Observation summary

Focus areaObservationSuggestion
DocucamCalculations worked step by step on the Docucam helped students follow.Lower the brightness; it was too bright to read comfortably.
QuestioningSequential questions to individual students kept the class engaged and added time to the lesson.—
Calculations by handWorking each calculation by hand rather than with a calculator sometimes interrupted the flow.Prepare calculation steps in advance, and use a calculator for some steps.
ExamplesThe cheesecake analogy made percent yield relatable.—

Committee review

I attended the committee's final evaluation meeting on November 12, 2024, submitted my Form A2 that day, and signed the committee's summary evaluation (Form C1) on December 9.
