Teaching Methodology

In this section, I outline my practical approach to fostering student engagement and supporting diverse learning needs. My teaching methodology emphasizes adaptability, clear communication, and fostering student accountability. Through structured strategies, regular feedback loops, and a balance between independence and guidance, I aim to create an inclusive learning environment that empowers students to take ownership of their academic journey.

Student Engagement and Learning Approach

In my first year, I focused on understanding and adapting to the diverse learning styles of my students through surveys and feedback sessions, aiming to tailor my teaching approach to their needs. However, this year, I recognized that this method was somewhat inefficient, particularly given the larger class size (over 200 students) and varied modalities. Instead, I shifted my focus to a more structured approach, emphasizing clear learning goals and fostering a collaborative environment where students are encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning progress. To support this shift, I implemented regular quizzes for each chapter, allowing students to self-assess and identify areas needing improvement. Periodic reminders reinforced that they are the experts on their own learning needs, and I made myself available as a resource to assist when they reached out. This approach not only highlighted personal accountability but also redefined our collaboration as an active partnership.

Engagement Strategy Refinements

In contrast to last year’s method of assessing learning styles through feedback, this year, I integrated case studies on common mistakes directly into the course. By embedding case studies that outline typical errors, I encouraged students to become more vigilant about potential pitfalls. This shift in strategy has fostered a proactive learning attitude where students can relate to the material and recognize mistakes before they occur. Moreover, I provided more detailed expectations for assignments and assessments, such as my preferred answer formats and acceptable calculation presentation, while reminding students about smaller classroom expectations, like informing me of absences. This added specificity helped students feel more secure in understanding what I’m looking for, resulting in improved clarity in their responses and submissions.

Supportive but Balanced Communication

Where last year’s approach involved prompting frequent student interaction, this year I have adjusted to a more patient, non-intrusive communication style. While I am available and actively supportive, I avoid pressuring students to communicate unless they are ready, respecting their autonomy. To maintain organized communication, I also shifted from email to Canvas messaging, which conveniently links students’ names to course sections, simplifying follow-up and enhancing responsiveness.

Increased Use of Video Resources

This year, I’ve built on my initial success with video resources by developing new materials to support key lab procedures, a project I initiated in the fall. These videos serve as guides that students can review prior to labs, ensuring they come prepared and familiar with essential steps. The video resources reduce confusion during lab sessions, enabling students to focus on the hands-on experience itself. Additionally, in the summer, I created a lab safety video to reinforce safe lab practices, further supporting students’ preparation.

Adjusted Pacing and Flexibility in Course Delivery

Lastly, I paid closer attention to pacing in response to student needs, extending timelines when necessary. If I noticed students required additional time with certain concepts, I adjusted the schedule by, for example, postponing quizzes by a week or adding supplementary practice problems. This year’s more flexible approach helped students build a stronger understanding before progressing, reinforcing mastery of the material.

Overall, these refinements have created a more adaptable and student-centered environment, encouraging both independence and accountability. By placing responsibility on students while offering accessible support, I have created a balanced framework that empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey.
